What distinguishes e-mopeds from e-bikes?

E-mopeds or speed pedelecs have greater power and speed capabilities than e-bikes. They fall under two categories:

  • L1e-A e-mopeds:
    • Power output up to 1000 W.
    • Top speed of 25 km/h.
    • Motor cuts off when pedaling stops.
    • Can be used in cycle lanes and bus lanes.
    • Require a motorcycle helmet.
  • L1e-B e-mopeds:
    • Power output up to 4000 W.
    • Top speed of 45 km/h.
    • Motor may work without pedaling (throttle e-mopeds).
    • Require a Category AM driver’s licence and insurance for throttle models.
    • Cannot be used in cycle lanes, bus lanes, footpaths, or pedestrian zones.
    • Require a motorcycle helmet.
