E-mopeds or speed pedelecs have greater power and speed capabilities than e-bikes. They fall under two categories:
- L1e-A e-mopeds:
- Power output up to 1000 W.
- Top speed of 25 km/h.
- Motor cuts off when pedaling stops.
- Can be used in cycle lanes and bus lanes.
- Require a motorcycle helmet.
- L1e-B e-mopeds:
- Power output up to 4000 W.
- Top speed of 45 km/h.
- Motor may work without pedaling (throttle e-mopeds).
- Require a Category AM driver’s licence and insurance for throttle models.
- Cannot be used in cycle lanes, bus lanes, footpaths, or pedestrian zones.
- Require a motorcycle helmet.
